North American ecosystems evolved in relationship with Indigenous peoples for hundreds of thousands of years. Sustainable conservation means restoration of keystone species like Beaver and Bison that are foundational to the way an ecosystem functions. It also means restoring keystone Indigenous ways of living that are in deep relationship with healthy ecosystems. Our work recognizes the importance of gleaning from multiple ways of knowing to effectively address the challenges we face. Both Indigenous and Western science inform the questions we ask and the research we design.
